Chicken update

Yesterday was a busy day.

Josh and I had made plans for him to take the day off work so that we could conquer Costco (since we were already out of town for the weekend).  Due to unforeseen difficulties at work, we were a little late getting out the door, but it worked out.  The kids stayed at Grandpa's house and kept him company.

So while I'm wandering around Costco I come across a chicken coop that they have for sale.  I knew immediately that it was the very coop that we had ordered for our chickens (which was backordered).  What was also immediately apparent was that it was going to be TOO SMALL once our chickens finished growing.  Grrrrr.  The label on it says 2-4 chickens can happily live there, but I think they must mean 2 regular chickens or 4 bantams.  Of course, Costco was selling it for a bit cheaper (mean, a lot cheaper) than our local feed store.  But they weren't carrying the bigger size, didn't offer anything online, and we didn't really want to have TWO chicken coops.  Plus there was the issue of how to get the dang thing home in our overly full car.

So we finished our shopping (two very full carts!), loaded up - being sure to leave room for the kids to squeeze in later, and headed home.

We decided to stop by the feed store to see if they could cancel our order and get us the bigger coop, which we knew that they had in stock already.  We caught them 20 minutes before closing time.  They offered to wait for us to run home, empty our Costco- and child-laden van and come back.  The kids helped us with a record unloading and 20 minutes later Josh and I were home with a chicken coop - finally!  The kids helped him put it together for "FHE" while I made dinner, and we moved the chicks in later that night.

So now we have this adorable coop in our backyard - which perfectly coordinates with our adorable chickens.   It's raccoon-proof, easy to clean, and looks a LOT nicer than our old coop.  Now we can throw away the appliance box that they've been living in and put away the funky mixture of chicken wire, plexiglass, tarp, and bungee cords that we were using to keep them secure.
